Participant Group Teachers teaching Geography and Technical Support Staff (TSS) from all secondary schools (Each teacher participant can be accompanied by a TSS in Session 3) 

Remarks:   
Objective(s) This course aims to 1. introduce to teachers the basic concepts and techniques in using Geographic Information System (GIS); 2. equip teachers with the knowledge and skills in using GIS in learning and teaching of geography; and 3. help teachers and technical support staff (TSS) or computer technicians to solve some basic technical problems encountered when using GIS. 
Programme Description Session 1 (3 hours) - Introduction to the concepts and applications of GIS in schools
  • What is GIS;
  • How to set up a GIS; and
  • Brief introduction to the basic applications of GIS, especially its application to the learning and teaching of Geography in secondary schools.
- Introduction to the basic functions of GIS: creation of maps with existing data, e.g. landuse map
  • Manipulation of map layer, e.g. zoom in / out, view to full extent, pan, display map in data view / layout view, change map scale;
  • Understanding usage of the basic functions in making queries, such as to find, to identify, and to measure;
  • Creating layers and adding data on the map; and
  • Creating and changing symbols on the map, e.g. scale, north arrow, etc.
Session 2 (3 hours) - Creating a map with data manipulation
  • Choropleth map with data manipulation, e.g. calculation of population density;
  • Map with chart or graphs; and
  • Creating buffer zone.
Session 3 (3 hours) (As each teacher participant can be accompanied by a TSS in this session, split class teaching will be arranged for this session.) - Geographic data provided in Hong Kong
  • Types and sources of data provided in Hong Kong;
  • Data conversion; and
  • Merging different sheets of maps.
- Setting up GIS in schools
  • What is the minimum setup requirement of using GIS;
  • Problems and solutions to the installation of the software and data filing; and
  • Common technical problems encountered when using GIS, e.g. problems related to the input of Chinese characters.
Session 4 (3 hours) - Tutorial / Presentation of Homework assignment — “Design a geography lesson using GIS to facilitate learning and teaching of Geography”
  • Presentation of assignment individually or in groups.
  • Feedback from instructor;
  • Answer participants’ enquiries on any practical problems that might be encountered when schools start to implement GIS in their Geography lessons; and
  • Summary and conclusion of the course.
Notes to nominated teachers: Attendance Certificate and 12 CPD hours will only be awarded to participants with satisfactory attendance (100% of the contact hours) and submission of course work at the end of the course.

Remarks 1. Each teacher is entitled to bring at most one TSS to attend session 3 of each event. As the TSS cannot apply the course by himself/herself, the teacher applicant should indicate whether he/she would bring a TSS along to the course when making online application. The name of the TSS should be provided in the online form in advance if he/she plans to attend the course with the TSS in pair in Session 3.

2. Heads of schools are requested to submit the online application to the Information Technology in Education Section on or before the closing date of nomination. Nominations will be processed on a first-come-first-served basis whereas considerations will also be given to allow more schools to participate. Prior application is required and walk-ins will not be entertained.

3. Please note that the said training course is funded by public money and events will be conducted as scheduled when the enrollment reaches 15 per event. To ensure proper use and no wastage of public money, teachers accepted should attend the course on time. If he/she is unable to attend the course before its commencement, head of the school should arrange another teacher to substitute in order to prevent wastage of public money. The substitute teacher should attend the course with the Substitution Note shown in Appendix I. Head of school is required to fill in a Notice of Absence shown in Appendix II for every absentee to provide the reason(s) for absence and failing to make substitution on time. Completed Substitution Notes and Notices of Absence should be faxed to the 'Pui Ching Education Centre' (2332 2144) for necessary action.

4. Accepted or rejected applicants and the respective school heads will be notified through the e-Service Portal Account at least 7 days before respective event commencement. Successful applicants attending the course should bring along their notification letters for the course and are advised to use public transport. No parking spaces are available at the venue.

5. In the event of public announcement by the Education Bureau that all schools are to be closed as a result of adverse weather conditions (e.g. tropical cyclone or rainstorm), the course scheduled on that session (A.M. or P.M.) will be cancelled pending further notice from the training institute on the make-up arrangement. 6. Being late or early leave for more than 30 minutes without prior consent will not be counted as achieving 100% attendance.
