| Background |
In 2005, information literacy framework has been drawn up by the Education Bureau for Hong Kong students. As follow-up and to enhance the information literacy among students, this course has been designed to equip school teachers with necessary practical experiences on how to cultivate students' Information Literacy through project-based learning.

| Objective(s) |
The aim of this course is to introduce the essence of the Information Literacy Framework for students developed in early 2005 as well as the practical experiences on how teachers might help students become information literate so that they can face the challenges that arise from knowledge-based economy and globalization.
After attending the course, teacher participants should be able to:
- realize the importance of information skills and attitudes to students in the information age;
- acquire basic ideas on how information literacy competence of students can be developed through project-based learning in schools; and
- create appropriate project-based learning scenarios and develop appropriate classroom activities for students to acquire basic information skills and to cultivate the right attitudes of students in using information.

| Programme Description |
Session 1: Overview of Human Requirements in the Information Age (3 hours)
- Overview of the Information Literacy Framework for students developed by the Education Bureau in 2005;
- Global perspectives of Information Literacy;
- What is necessary for pursuit of personal growth and economic development in the information age;
- Examples that illustrate improper use of information;
- Examples that show lack of information skills and subsequent learning/living hurdles encountered;
- How Information Literacy can facilitate student learning;
- Basic requirements of Information Literacy;
- Experience sharing among teacher participants on issues related to handling of information;
- How Information Literacy could be introduced through project-based learning in schools;
- Tips and relevant tools for evaluating the information skills or information literacy competence of students; and
- Discussion of the assignment to be submitted by teacher participants before Session 2.
Session 2: Developing the Information Skills and Right Attitudes of Students (3 hours)
- Experience sharing among teacher participants on issues related to development of information skills and attitude of students;
- Roles of teachers in the information age;
- Tips for developing the information skills and right attitudes of students;
- Examples for development of information skills;
- Examples on proper use of information in learning and teaching;
- Demonstration with hands-on practice of developing assessment tools for teaching information skills and attitude;
- Support and resources available to teacher participants related to teaching information skills/Information Literacy; and
- Presentation of selected assignments and feedback from the course instructor and other teacher participants.
Notes to nominated teachers:
Attendance Certificate and 6 CPD hours will only be awarded to participants with 100% attendance and submission of course work at the end of the course.

| Remarks |
1. Heads of schools are requested to submit the online application to the Information Technology in Education Section on or before the closing date of nomination. Nominations will be processed on a first-come-first-served basis whereas considerations will also be given to allow more schools to participate. Prior application is required and walk-ins will not be entertained.
2. Please note that the said training course is funded by public money and events will be conducted as scheduled when the enrollment reaches 15 per event. To ensure proper use and no wastage of public money, teachers accepted should attend the course on time. If he/she is unable to attend the course before its commencement, head of the school should arrange another teacher to substitute in order to prevent wastage of public money. The substitute teacher should attend the course with the Substitution Note shown in Appendix I. Head of school is required to fill in a Notice of Absence shown in Appendix II for every absentee to provide the reason(s) for absence and failing to make substitution on time. Completed Substitution Notes and Notices of Absence should be faxed to the 'Centre for the Advancement of Information Technology in Education, The Chinese University of Hong Kong ' (2603 7352) for necessary action.
3. Accepted or rejected applicants and the respective school heads will be notified through the e-Service Portal Account at least 7 days before respective event commencement. Successful applicants attending the course should bring along their notification letters for the course and are advised to use public transport. No parking spaces are available at the venue.
4. In the event of adverse weather conditions (e.g. tropical cyclone or rainstorm), concerned training sessions (A.M. or P.M.) scheduled, as per class arrangements of the CUHK, will be cancelled pending further notice form the training institute on the make-up arrangement. 5. Being late or early leave for more than 30 minutes without prior consent will not be counted as achieving 100% attendance.
