Participant Group Science teachers from all secondary schools. (Each teacher participant can be accompanied by a technical support staff (TSS) or computer technician).

Remarks:
Objective(s) This course aims to introduce the use of interval and high-speed photography to facilitate the learning and teaching of science subjects in secondary schools. After attending the course, participants should be able to:
  • identify the topics in science subjects for which normal playback of photographs taken at intervals and photographs/videos taken at high frame rate could help students understand natural and physical phenomena;
  • understand how interval and high-speed photography can promote students’interest and competence in scientific investigation;
  • acquire knowledge and skills in taking photographs at long time intervals and videos at ultra-high speed; and
  • stitch up photographs taken at long time intervals for video playback and edit the videos with freeware.

Programme Description Session 1 (3 hours)
  1. Overview of the science curricula, in particular the New Secondary School curricula for science subjects and the Science Education Key Learning Area Curriculum Guide (Primary 1 to Secondary 3) published by the Curriculum Development Council of HKSAR and highlight the topics for which interval photography and high-speed photography could be used to facilitate students’ visualization of scientific (natural and physical) phenomena;
  2. Presentation of sample quality videos, e.g. those available from BBC, National Geographic, Discovery Channel or the Internet, showing scientific phenomena taken at long time intervals or at ultra high speeds;
  3. Introduction to simple, inexpensive photographic equipment that teachers can use to take photographs at long time intervals and record videos at ultra high speeds up to 1000 frames per second;
  4. Demonstration to show basic setup and procedure for interval photography;
  5. Discussion of topics for which interval photography can be used to help students understand natural phenomena e.g. seed germination, phototropism, etc.;
  6. Demonstration to show how photographs taken at long time intervals can be stitched together with caption added to become a video clip using freeware;
  7. Hands-on practice of interval photography in groups;
  8. Discussion of the course work to be submitted in Session 2.
Session 2 (3 hours)
  1. Demonstration on using inexpensive digital cameras to record videos at high speed up to 1000 frames per second and take multi-exposure photographs;
  2. Discussion of setup requirements for high-speed recording of videos and multi-exposure photography;
  3. Discussion of topics for which high-speed videos can be used to help students understand scientific phenomena e.g. collision of objects in a two-dimensional plane;
  4. Discussion of topics for which multi-exposure photography can be used to help students understand scientific phenomena e.g. comparing speeds of free fall for vertical and parabolic tracks;
  5. Hands-on practice of taking high-speed videos and multi-exposure photographs about scientific phenomena in groups;
  6. Demonstration and hands-on practice of editing the high-speed video clips using freeware;
  7. Presentation of selected products developed by the participants with feedback from the instructor; and
  8. Discussion of problems that participants may encounter in trying out interval photography and high-speed photography and multi-exposure photography in schools and the possible solutions.

Remarks 1. Each teacher is entitled to bring at most one TSS to attend the course. As the TSS cannot apply the course by himself/herself, the teacher applicant should indicate whether he/she would bring a TSS along to the course when making online application. The name of the TSS should be provided in the online form in advance if he/she plans to attend the course with the TSS in pair.

2. Heads of schools are requested to submit the online application to the Information Technology in Education Section on or before the closing date of nomination. Nominations will be processed on a first-come-first-served basis whereas considerations will also be given to allow more schools to participate. Prior application is required and walk-ins will not be entertained.

3. Please note that the said training course is funded by public money and events will be conducted as scheduled when the enrollment reaches 16 per event. To ensure proper use and no wastage of public money, teachers accepted should attend the course on time. If he/she is unable to attend the course before its commencement, head of the school should arrange another teacher to substitute in order to prevent wastage of public money. The substitute teacher should attend the course with the Substitution Note shown in Appendix I. Head of school is required to fill in a Notice of Absence shown in Appendix II for every absentee to provide the reason(s) for absence and failing to make substitution on time. Completed Substitution Notes and Notices of Absence should be faxed to the 'Institute of Professional Education and Knowledge of the Vocational Training Council' (2891 5707) for necessary action.

4. Accepted or rejected applicants and the respective school heads will be notified through the e-Service Portal Account at least 7 days before respective event commencement. Successful applicants attending the course should bring along their notification letters for the course and are advised to use public transport. No parking spaces are available at the venue.

5. In the event of adverse weather conditions (e.g. tropical cyclone or rainstorm), concerned training sessions (A.M. or P.M.) scheduled, as per class arrangements of Vocational Training Council, will be cancelled pending further notice from the training institute on the make-up arrangement. Details of class arrangements during tropical cyclone/rainstorm are available at the following website: http://iclassroom.hkedcity.net/teacher/rtc0809-hsp.

6. Being late or early leave for more than 30 minutes without prior consent will not be counted as achieving 100% attendance.
