Remarks:   
Objective(s) This course aims to introduce free online office tools that teachers and students may use to create word documents, presentations, spreadsheets and electronic forms for data collection. After finishing the course, teacher participants should be able to:
  1. locate common web-based free online office tools that teachers and students could subscribe for usage from the Internet;
  2. realize the features, strength, limitations and security issues of these tools;
  3. understand how to operate the tools, share the files with other people, collect information and use the tools for collaborative work in real-time; and
  4. apply the tools in various learning and teaching activities.  
Programme Description Session 1 (3 hours)
  1. Overview of common offline and online office tools that teachers and students may use to create word documents, spreadsheets, presentations and data collection forms nowadays;
  2. Advantages of online office tools, e.g. Google Docs, over conventional office tools installed in computers and their limitations as well as the security issues;
  3. Introduction to one kind of free-of-charge web-based online service that teachers and students can subscribe for usage of the online tools available to create word documents, spreadsheets, presentations and electronic forms for data collection;
  4. Discussion of subscription procedure and general features of the online tools offered by the free online service mentioned in (3);
  5. Hands-on practice of creating, editing, saving, categorizing and sharing word documents by means of the online document tool;
  6. Hands-on practice of creating and editing presentations with text, images, video clips as well as graphics embedded using the online presentation tool;
  7. Discussion of scenarios where the online document and presentation tools could be applied in learning and teaching; and
  8. Instructions to participants on the assignment to be completed and submitted before the second session.
Session 2 (3 hours)
  1. Introduction to the online tool that users can use to create spreadsheets;
  2. Hands-on practice of creating and editing spreadsheets and the means to write formulae, draw charts, leave comments and embed images in the spreadsheets;
  3. How several users may edit and input data into a spreadsheet concurrently in a real-time mode;
  4. Discussion of the means to create electronic data-collection forms using the online tool;
  5. Hands-on practice of creating different types of online forms, sending the form to target recipients, collecting duly-completed forms and analyzing the data collected using a tool available from the free online service;
  6. Discussion and hands-on practice of scenarios, such as project-based learning or voting for a controversial issue in learning history or liberal studies, where the online office tools could be used for collaborative learning and real-time presentation of the voting results;
  7. How the free online office tools could be applied to mobile learning outside school; and
  8. Presentation of assignments by participants with feedback from instructor.

Remarks 1. Heads of schools are requested to submit the online application to the Information Technology in Education Section on or before the closing date of nomination. Nominations will be processed on a first-come-first-served basis whereas considerations will also be given to allow more schools to participate. Prior application is required and walk-ins will not be entertained.

2. Please note that the said training course is funded by public money and events will be conducted as scheduled when the enrollment reaches 15 per event. To ensure proper use and no wastage of public money, teachers accepted should attend the course on time. If he/she is unable to attend the course before its commencement, head of the school should arrange another teacher to substitute in order to prevent wastage of public money. The substitute teacher should attend the course with the Substitution Note shown in Appendix I. Head of school is required to fill in a Notice of Absence shown in Appendix II for every absentee to provide the reason(s) for absence and failing to make substitution on time. Completed Substitution Notes and Notices of Absence should be faxed to the 'Institute of Professional Education and Knowledge of the Vocational Training Council' (2891 5707) for necessary action.

3. Accepted or rejected applicants and the respective school heads will be notified through the e-Service Portal Account at least 7 days before respective event commencement. Successful applicants attending the course should bring along their notification letters for the course and are advised to use public transport. No parking spaces are available at the venue.

4. In the event of adverse weather conditions (e.g. tropical cyclone or rainstorm), concerned training sessions (A.M. or P.M.) scheduled, as per class arrangements of Vocational Training Council, will be cancelled pending further notice from the training institute on the make-up arrangement. 5. Being late or early leave for more than 30 minutes without prior consent will not be counted as achieving 100% attendance.
