| Objective(s) |
The course will focus on the challenge of diversity for English Language teaching in Hong Kong schools. It will help participants:
1. understand the very different characteristics of the student populations in Hong Kong Schools, and consider how teachers can help them maximize their progress in speaking, reading and writing English;
2. grasp issues related to cognition, metacognition, memory and background for language learners who may be finding the normal English Language curriculum problematic;
3. evolve management, accommodation and helping strategies for the diverse populations of students studying English in Hong Kong schools;
4. consider support strategies for students with Dyslexia, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and Autism Spectrum Disorder; whilst also
5. take full account of multi-cultural and multi-linguistic factors and the Hong Kong policy of the Whole School Approach to Integrated Education.
|
| Programme Description |
The course comprises the following three strands of study:
1. Characteristics of Diversity in Language Learning
- This strand addresses the nature of learner diversity as opposed to difficulties and therefore extends its focus from one of language learning difficulties to one that considers the need to accommodate: children of high ability and children with different linguistic, educational and cultural backgrounds.
2. Issues of Planning and Assessment: Implementing a Whole School Approach to English Language Learning
- This strand looks at the broader question of how schools accommodate a diverse population in their planning and assessment procedures and how teachers can appraise the success of their interventions in specific areas.
3. Catering for Diversity: Classroom Strategies
- This strand looks at how teachers should develop the strengths and help overcome the difficulties of a diverse population of learners in the classroom.
The curriculum structure of the course and its strands/modules on offer are subject to change.
