Participant Group Finance Type: ALL
Level: SECONDARY
Subject/Function: SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND MATHEMATICS
Participant: TEACHERS, TEACHING ASSISTANTS AND ASSISTANTS TEACHERS
Background Secondary school students often ask about mathematics, “When will we ever use this in the real world?” In fact, researchers in mathematics are making new discoveries all the time. These discoveries are being applied in many contexts - encryption of the content of daily emails and WhatsApp messages, remote transmission and reception of audio visual messages, the invention and rise of digital currencies such as bitcoin, and artificial intelligence calculations, etc.
Modern mathematicians do not just work in isolation. They collaborate with doctors, scientists, lawyers, engineers and experts in many other fields on applications that are changing the world in powerful ways. For this reason, the Mathematics Education Section organise this enrichment seminar to introduce the mathematics behind those technological fields so as to enrich teachers with the latest development of applying mathematical knowledge and making connections between mathematics and real-life and STEM-related scenarios.
Objective(s) To broaden the participants’ scope of knowledge in the relationship among artificial intelligence, big data and mathematics.
Programme Description (1)To introduce the concepts of artificial intelligence and big data, and its connection with secondary Mathematics curriculum and STEM Education
(2)To cover mathematical concepts and algorithms that can deal with some of the challenges posed by Artificial Intelligence and Big Data
(3)To help participants recognise the latest advancements in mathematics
(4)To introduce the resources for facilitating the learning and teaching artificial intelligence
