Participant Group Primary and Secondary Teachers WITHOUT relevant teacher training qualifications in TESOL
(NETs will be considered to have fulfilled the TESOL qualification requirement upon completion of the course. Local teachers who are already holders of a PGDE/PGCE majoring in subjects other than English will be considered to have fulfilled the SCOLAR requirement on relevant teacher training upon completion of the course.)

Background This Government-funded course is approved by the Education Bureau (EDB). Schools which release teachers undertaking this course may apply for supply teachers. Objective(s) The course is designed to help non-TESOL-trained teachers to gain an overview of the basic principles and good practices required for teaching English as a second or foreign language effectively. It also aims at familiarising them with important features of the language education context in Hong Kong, especially the education system and learning culture. Programme Description The course comprises the following two strands of study: 1. The Curriculum Strand Changing Curriculum and Classroom Practices in Hong Kong 2. The Methodology Strand Second Language Acquisition Theories: Classroom Implications Teaching Vocabulary: Sounds, Forms and Meanings English for the Real World

Remarks 1. To be eligible for admission, applicants should be:
‧in-service primary or secondary school teachers without relevant teacher training qualifications in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). Both Local English Teachers (LETs) and Native English-speaking Teachers (NETs) are welcome to apply, however, priority will be given to primary NET teachers; and
‧recommended by their school principals;

2. Applications should be made to the Hong Kong Institute of Education direct;

3. Upon completion of the course, if participants want to record the number of CPD hours in their personal profile in the e-Services Portal, they can do it on their own.

Name of Certificate: Certificate of Completion (To be awarded a Certificate of Completion, participants must obtain a pass in all strands and successfully fulfill the attendance requirements as stipulated by the course.)
