Primary and Secondary Teachers WITHOUT relevant teacher training qualifications in TESOL
|Background||This Government-funded course is approved by the Education Bureau (EDB). Schools which release teachers undertaking this course may apply for supply teachers. |Objective(s)||The programme is designed to help non-TESOL-trained teachers to gain an overview of the basic principles and good practices required for effectively teaching English as a second or foreign language. It also aims at familiarising them with important features of the language education context in Hong Kong, especially the education system and learning culture. On completion of the programme, participants will be able to: 1. demonstrate a better understanding of the cultural, psychological and contextual influences that shape the learning, teaching and assessment culture in the Hong Kong context; 2. understand the latest curriculum and pedagogical reforms in the language curriculum; 3. use suitable skills and strategies to create a diversified language learning environment through conducting school-based action learning projects; 4. identify and implement effective teaching and learning strategies based on the latest second language acquisition research and practice; 5. understand the basic principles in the effective teaching of pronunciation through phonics; 6. help their students develop effective strategies to cope with pronunciation difficulties; 7. design pedagogically sound vocabulary teaching activities; and 8. teach the core skills of English that draw on the everyday texts of students’ lifeworld in order to make the learning of English "relevant", "real" and "fun" for them.|

1. To be eligible for admission, applicants should be:
‧in-service primary or secondary school teachers without relevant teacher training qualifications in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). Both Local English Teachers (LETs) and Native English-speaking Teachers (NETs) are welcome to apply, however, priority will be given to primary NET teachers; and
‧recommended by their school principals;
2. Applications should be made to the Hong Kong Institute of Education direct.
